"When you begin the process of creating your own house, you need your architect to provide guidance, ideas and an opportunity to help you articulate what you want to achieve. Elly collaborated with us very skilfully to provide all of the above. Always listening to and hearing us, providing timely pragmatic options and solutions, Elly was great to work with and the ‘final design’ more than met our brief.

The resulting beautifully designed Passivhaus is a joy to live in. With ambient temperatures across a very cold Winter (-10C) and an unseasonably hot Summer (33C) the house has performed extremely well, and we now enjoy very low energy bills. Warm in Winter and cool in Summer, we credit this success to Elly’s design. Perfectly sized and placed windows ensure optimum solar gain while the design of the roof overhang stops the midday Summer sun right on the threshold of the big sliding glass doors to stop us over heating.

Aesthetically, the windows perfectly frame views in the landscape around us, bringing in the light and the outside while we enjoy all the comforts of warmth. Having the living space with a roof terrace on the first floor has been a revelation and has transformed our enjoyment of the trees and wildlife around us.

Overall, we can’t recommend Elly and Arbor Architects enough."

Matt is a highly motivated and knowledgeable architect, always going the extra mile to help keep the project on track. Working with him to deliver the UK’s first Passivhaus Plus Building at Bicester Eco Centre was an enjoyable learning curve for all involved, Matt was able to offer professional help and guidance throughout the process. On site, he was knowledgeable in terms of Passivhaus construction and detailing, quick to respond to queries and always conscious of the time and cost implications of the the design decisions he made. His use of 3D BIM was integral in creating a collaborative way in solving problems. Overall, Matt was a pleasure to work with and I would recommend him and his company to anyone looking at starting a Fabric-first / Zero-Carbon building project.

"It’s been great working with Matt on the design of our new home. Being involved so closely from the outset and honing our brief was fundamental in getting the home we wanted. Being fully involved in the design iterations really enabled us to design the spaces around the rooms we wanted. The way in which Matt interpreted our ideas into the final scheme was brilliant.

It is testament to the early design drivers that the house frames the panoramic views across the landscape and creates varied spaces around the house.

The cardboard model for the final design was a great tool in being able to understand the spaces in 3D ahead of construction starting.”

"We worked closely with Elly on the design of our new house. We had quite clear ideas about what we wanted from the project and how we wanted the house to work for us.

We felt that Elly understood our aims from the first meeting. She delivered a design which we went on to build on budget, and exceeded our expectations. We have a home which is a joy to live in, works beautifully for us, is quiet, comfortable and has enhanced our lives.

The house was built to passive principles, the temperature inside does not vary much throughput the year and running costs are very low. We have beautiful outdoor as well as indoor living space, which enables us make the most of our rural setting. I think we have about 47 different places to sit!

It is a testament to Ellys sympathetic design skills that there were no objections to our plans, despite the house being sited on the edge of a small village.
We enjoyed working with Elly as she shaped our ideas and guided us through the design process."
