We are thrilled to announce that The Garden Room at Cwm Barn has been shortlisted for the prestigious RIBA West Midlands Award 2024, a recognition of the project's design quality and its outstanding contribution to sustainable and adaptable family living. We are delighted that The Garden Room has been shortlisted; this, alongside the recent case study featured on Timber Development UK, is a testament to the successful outcomes of this project.

The detached ancillary building, designed with a low-carbon footprint and energy efficiency in mind, serves as a versatile retreat for our clients and their teenage children. The space encompasses a home office, exercise area, plant room, and a multi-functional family room, offering a harmonious blend of functionality and comfort. This detached ancillary building, designed with a low-carbon footprint, is a retreat for our clients and their teenage children, featuring a home office, exercise area, plant room, and a versatile family room. It was thanks to our client's shared vision for a contextual response to their site and their appreciation for design detail that has resulted in such a well-crafted and harmonious building.

What sets The Garden Room apart is its commitment to sustainable living and the use of natural materials. The rural site is a canvas for eco-conscious design, featuring a structural frame and exquisite interior crafted from UK-grown timber. The decision to incorporate locally sourced materials not only aligns with our design principles but also reflects a dedication to minimising environmental impact.

A special mention goes to Barnby Design for their contribution of stunning timber furniture, seamlessly integrating with the overall aesthetic of the space. Their craftsmanship adds a touch of elegance and warmth to The Garden Room, enhancing the overall experience for its inhabitants.

Collaboration played a crucial role in bringing this vision to life, and we were fortunate to work alongside structural engineers at Build Collective. Their fabric-first approach and commitment to locally sourced timber resonated with our ethos, ensuring that the project not only met but exceeded our sustainability goals.

Firth Construction also deserves recognition for their meticulous attention to detail and expertise in timber construction. Their dedication to quality craftsmanship resulted in a high-end finish, bringing The Garden Room to the level of excellence deserving of the RIBA West Midlands awards shortlist.

The Garden Room at Cwm Barn stands as a testament to the possibilities of sustainable architecture and thoughtful design, offering a glimpse into the future of family living that prioritises both functionality and environmental responsibility. We are honoured to be recognised by RIBA and wish all the other shortlisted projects across the West Midlands and different categories the best of luck!
